Valerie Theng Matherne was admitted to the Louisiana Bar in 1998 and Mississippi Bar in 2002. She is admitted to practice before all federal and state courts in Louisiana and Mississippi, and the United States Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit. She previously served on the board of directors for the Louisiana Association of Defense Counsel. She received her education from Florida State University (B.S., 1995) and Loyola University School of Law (J.D., 1998) where she was the Secretary of the Student Bar Association and Vice-President and a founding member of the Loyola Chapter of the Asian Pacific American Law Students Association. Ms. Matherne was recognized as a "Mover and Shaker" in the Diversity & The Bar Magazine, a publication of the Minority Corporate Counsel Association. Her practice focuses on complex litigation matters, including insurance defense, coverage disputes, bad faith, product liability, premises, auto, commercial auto and truck liability. Additionally, Ms. Matherne has received an AV Preeminent Rating from Martindale-Hubbell, the highest peer recognition rating for professional excellence.
She has over 18 years of successful litigation experience including:
Insurance Defense: defends claims related to bodily injury, property damage, and extra-contractual bad-faith as well as coverage issues.
Premises Liability: defends retail stores, apartment complexes, nightclubs, restaurants, and other property owners on complex premises claims.
Products Liability: defends manufacturers and suppliers for a wide array of products.
Toxic Tort: Asbestos (state and multi-district litigation), Manganese (state and multi-district litigation), Chinese Drywall (state and multi-district litigation), Silica, Toxic Mold, and numerous chemical exposure and hazardous waste cases.
Construction: Represented owners, developers, contractors and subcontractors in complex construction litigation on both public and private projects.
Employment: Defended companies against claims of discrimination, including harassment, retaliation, and wrongful termination.
Admiralty and Maritime: Jones Act and maritime personal injury, Longshore and Harbor Workers' Compensations Act Claims, collision and allision, product liability, charter agreements and master service agreements.
